Bonnie Schneider
As a result of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) however, after experiencing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75), I am an advocate for education that integrates study of the arts alongside study of other disciplines. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate and an MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. It is not surprising that the department of ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where I taught from 1975 until 1976 is housed in the College of Letters and Sciences' Department of Music. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions as well as seeing the larger view. I am very passionate about teaching students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors), which is why I've written three books - Music in India: The Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. There are times when I engage in mainly academic pursuits and periods where I include administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies in 1999, and is now the Chair of the Department of Music again).
